The Abridged Turkish Language Guide

Embarking on creating a guide to the Turkish language was initially a venture shrouded in uncertainty. From the first spark of inspiration to the final flourish of the pen, the journey was one defined by wakeful dreams and resolute determination. With great pleasure, I present this book, a product of months of tireless effort and dedicated craftsmanship, born from the vision of providing a resource unlike any other.

Upon revisiting my earlier work, "Let's Learn Turkish" or "Turkic Language Course," I recognized a need to veer from the conventional approach of alphabet and basic language foundations. Instead, I resolved to address the linguistic hurdles faced by Uyghur learners, delving into the intricacies of grammar and sharing insights garnered during my formative years of mastering the Turkish language. Thus, "The Abridged Turkish Language Guide" took shape.

Comprising 21 chapters, this guide primarily draws parallels between the grammatical structures and rules of Turkish and Uyghur. By elucidating both disparities and commonalities, I endeavour to present the core tenets of Turkish language comprehension in a succinct and accessible manner tailored for both students and independent learners alike.

Central to this handbook is a meticulous exploration of Turkish morphology, underpinned by a comparative analysis of the two languages. A seamless bridge between Turkish and Uyghur is constructed through real-world examples and practical exercises.

The book traverses vowels, punctuation, word formation, nouns, moods, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, conjunctions, numbers, sentence structures, and more. Each topic is dissected with lucid explanations and vivid illustrations, drawing from a pool of active vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and proverbs woven into the fabric of everyday life. This immersive approach fosters an enriching environment for Turkish acquisition and invites a nuanced exploration of linguistic nuances.

The vocabulary incorporated within these pages is culled from established reference materials and cross-referenced with authoritative works such as the "Turkish Dictionary" and "Uyghur Language Explanatory Dictionary." This ensures a comprehensive and reliable lexicon, foundational for practical application and further linguistic pursuits.

Nearly 500 essential terms are spotlighted to complement the instructional core, ranging from familial relations to weather conditions and days of the week to professional domains. A meticulously curated "Turkish-UyghurUyghur-Turkish Dictionary" boasting over 2,000 entries is an indispensable tool for expanding one's lexical repertoire.

In the appendix, readers will find a compendium of commonplace expressions and salutations tailored to diverse occasions, from academic pursuits to everyday interactions.

In crafting this guide, I have distilled a quarter-century of experience in language learning and teaching. Drawing from the insights gleaned in my previous work, "A Brief English Grammar," the focus is on flexibility and adaptability in Turkish language application. I fervently hope this guide serves as a versatile companion, facilitating a seamless transition into proficient Turkish usage.

I extend heartfelt thanks to Associate Professor Dr. Adem Omrr, whose diligent proofreading efforts and invaluable contributions enhanced the quality of this book. Additionally, I am indebted to Miss Rahile Mahmut Ghazi for her meticulous review of the English-Turkish comparative elements. To all prospective readers, I wish you success in your language-learning endeavours.

As for "The child of man shall not be blameless," I am humbly aware that my expertise may fall short in certain areas. I wholeheartedly welcome feedback from librarians and readers alike, urging them to kindly point out any errors, omissions, or areas warranting further consideration within the book.

This labour of love culminated in May 2011 in London, with subsequent revisions in May 2017.
